How to Program a Chevy Key Fob

Key with key fob in hand

When you purchase a new Chevy vehicle, you’ll get a Chevy key fob that acts as a remote for several different functions on your car. But what if you lose the original key, or need to create a new key for another driver in your family? While most drivers know how to use a Chevy key fob intuitively, learning how to program a Chevy key fob can be a bit more challenging. Our Chevy key fob programming guide has all the information you’ll need to complete the job at home in Carmel.

Chevy Key Fob Programming: Step by Step

Whether you’ve got a Chevy Silverado key fob or a Chevy Malibu key fob in hand, you can learn how to program a Chevy key fob in less than five minutes. Follow these steps to activate your key fob’s programming setting and pair the key with your vehicle:

  1. Use your Chevy key to unlock your doors manually.
  2. Once all of the doors are shut, insert the key into the ignition.
  3. Press and hold the unlock button on the driver’s side door. Turn your key to the “On” position. The electronics will turn on, but the engine will stay off.
  4. Turn the key to the “Off” position. Turn it back “On” and right back to “Off”.
  5. Let go of the unlock button.
  6. If you hear the door locks engage and disengage, that’s a sign that your Chevy key fob programming can start.
  7. Press and hold the “Lock” and “Unlock” buttons at the same time. When you hear the door locks engage and disengage, that means your programming has been successful.
  8. Reinsert your key into the ignition and turn to the “On” position to end programming.
