How to Install a Car Battery in 13 Steps

Once you’ve gathered the necessary supplies, the process of replacing a car battery isn’t complicated. Just remember that some vehicles may need to have certain features or accessories reset and calibrated after the battery has been replaced. Take a look at how to install a car battery below:

  1. Park your vehicle and ensure your parking brake is activated.
  2. Make sure your vehicle is off and locate your battery. It’ll typically be found underneath the hood.
  3. Put on rubber gloves and begin loosening the nut that holds the negative battery cable to the negative battery terminal. The cable is typically black. If the nut isn’t loosening, you can try an anti-corrosion spray or specific pliers designed to remove battery terminal cables.
  4. Repeat step three to remove the positive battery cable.
  5. Loosen the battery tie-down.
  6. Ensure the cables are out of the way and carefully remove the old battery. Note that the battery is typically heavy.
  7. Utilizing a battery cleaning solution to clean the cable connectors and the battery tray. A wire brush may help with removing tough debris and corrosion.
  8. Place the new battery in the battery tray.
  9. Secure the battery using the battery tie-down.
  10. Attach the positive battery cable to the positive battery terminal post.
  11. Repeat step 10 for the negative battery cable.
  12. Ensure the connectors are secure.
  13. Start your vehicle and ensure everything is working properly.
